ideas* were engaged by QER, an integrated resources company, to explore options for energy and water recovery at one of their major oil shale plants.
QER holds mining and other tenement rights to some of Australia’s largest and potentially most productive oil shale deposits.
ideas* preliminary engineering report compared a previously identified heat exchanger technology baselines with several alternative technologies and fundamental requirements for water, heat and power recovery.
By adopting the recommended technologies ideas* identified that substantial cost savings could be made over the life of the plant, not to mention the environmental benefits.
From a list of eight potential technologies, ideas* recommended three key technologies based on a defined set of common assessment criteria. These included:
- Absorption refrigeration/heat pumps for best water recovery.
- Organic Rankine cycle for the best electricity generation.
- Thermoacoustic for the best heat recovery.
