Bluescope Steel - Hole Detection System
Project Synopsis
ideas* developed a hole detection vision system for Bluescope Steel (formally BHP) to provide a level of quality assurance unavailable at the time of design. The system uses high intensity fluorescent lights and high frequency line scan cameras to detect holes and imperfections on coil strips.
The system is capable of scanning up to 1600mm wide coil strips travelling at 220 metres/minute and detecting holes as small as 0.25mm in diameter.
Outcomes
The turnkey system was installed into the production environment with minimal impact to production. The automated process removed the need for someone to inspect every coil whilst providing a greater level of quality assurance.
