A common prolem we see throughout industry is a band aid approach to problem solving. Quick fixes made to keep production running with limited understanding of the original design intent. Repeated over time this can quickly spiral out of control. The San Francisco Bay Bridge eye bolt repair and subsequent failure is a recent highly visible example of band aid engineering gone wrong. The not only appears to be limited to industry. Many aspects of our current health system have a focus on treating symptoms with quick fixes rather than dealing with the root cause. The solution? Well it requires a combination of engineering expertise and embedded knowledge within the organisation. Unfortunately internal cost cutting, a shortage of engineering skills and the typical career path of a young engineer (where 2 years in a role can be considered stagnation) makes this incredibly difficult. With these barriers in mind a smarter approach for most companies may be to focus on building robust and accessible systems for managing design/engineering information and utilising 3rd party engineering services.
